June 17th - Leveraging Visual Studio Team System w/ Mike Vincent
Abstract: Visual Studio Team System can be a good investment in these tough economic times. In this fast moving session we'll explore some of the ways VSTS 2008 can deliver value by getting your whole organization team involved to deliver successful projects. We'll touch on people, process, process templates, TDD, continuous integration and reports. And, maybe provide you some material to convince pointy haired bosses the value of good application life-cycle management.

Then we’ll move on to highlight what’s coming in VSTS 2010. It’s BIG!

Mike Vincent

About the Presenter: Mike Vincent is a solutions architect based in Orange County, California providing clients with application lifecycle management, software architecture and development services, primarily focusing on Microsoft .NET technology. He has been in the software business for over 20 years in addition to engineering and marketing management positions.

Actively involved in the user group community since the early 90's, Mike is Vice President of INETA Noram. He founded both the SoCal .Net Architecture group which is now also IASA's SoCal Chapter and the Orange County C# Developers group, now OC .NET. Mike is a frequent presenter at user groups, regional events, and code camps.

May 20th - Generics, Collections, and Enumerables w/ Steve Bearman
Abstract: With Generics, Generic Collections, and Generic Enumerables we are now writing code in new, much more powerful ways. Generics (MyClass<T>, List<T>, etc.) is the foundation of this, and all three are a critical part of many leading edge technologies, including LINQ. They are also powerful, effective tools for your own use. In this practical, feature-packed, C# code intensive session you will learn the ins and outs of Generics, and its uses and limitations. We will explore enumerable interfaces (required for foreach( ), LINQ, and LINQ extension methods), how they work, how to use them, and especially how to get the compiler to do most of the implementation. We'll cover the generic versions of .NET Collections (List< >, LinkedList< >, Stack< >, Queue< >, Dictionary< >, HashSet< >, etc.) and how to select and how to use them. We'll also look at the new generic delegate types and new design patterns that use them. We will see this in action with a simple Poker card example. From a card class (and its enumeration) and decks (collections), through shuffling (enumerating with a generic method), dealing and cheating (enumerating with collections, generic delegates), to evaluating poker hands (enumerations and surprisingly simple LINQ).

About the Presenter: Steve Bearman is an independent software developer with his company, Suzy B Studios, and Chase Computing International, and Systems Engine. He has developed software throughout his professional career, originally in direct support of science and engineering, later for the broader range of technology, medicine, business, ecommerce, and finance. He has taught graduate-level computer science, and has published technical papers dealing with the collection and use of data. For several years he managed operations and marketing for a manufacturing corporation. His recent large software projects include supporting international clients for a large, networked GPS-based fleet management system he developed; developing software for a large hedge fund; and designing and developing ASP.NET software in support of NASA/JPL's Deep Space Network. He has many great colleagues and enjoys collaborating on projects of all sizes.

What will be covered
AGENDA
Did you make it to MIX 09? Join us for the afternoon and get the very Best of MIX!
What's New in Silverlight 3?
Are you interested in building business-focused Rich Internet Applications (RIAs)?  Would you like to take advantage of 3D in the browser, but assume it is too hard?  Have you wanted to take a Silverlight application offline?  Then this session is for you.  We will explore and illustrate the new features of Silverlight 3, including the following:
·         Support for perspective 3D
·         Offline Support
·         .NET RIA Services which simplifies the traditional n-tier application pattern by bringing together the ASP.NET and Silverlight platforms

Building Web Applications with Windows Azure
This session will begin with a brief overview of Azure and discuss some of the announcements made at MIX.  We will then illustrate through demo how to build a Windows Azure application from the ground up.  We will illustrate how to consume Azure Table Storage, how to host services, web pages and Silverlight components, as well as how to deploy your solution to the cloud.

MVC 1.0 vs ASP.Net Webforms
Have you heard about the new ASP.NET MVC  framework from Microsoft and wondered what it was all about? Are you curious whether this replaces ASP.Net WebForms?  Well in this session you will learn how to use the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern to take advantage of your favorite .NET Framework language for writing business logic in a way that is de-coupled from the views of the data.  In addition, we will talk about the pros and cons of both MVC and Web Forms, how to determine the best choice for a specific project, various techniques and patterns used to build MVC applications vs. Web Forms applications, and the implications for using each approach.

While we aren't validating parking, we've got plenty of fun give-aways to make it worth your while to attend!
Please register for the event most convenient for you. Hope to see you there!

Book Review: Professional SQL Server 2005 Performance Tuning
Reviewed by Sudheer K. Maharana

From my experience with SQL Server and Oracle for the last 15 years of my IT experience, Database Performance tuning is more of an art and science (even though the book says it is more of a science). As SQL Server transformed into different versions, the information to gather performance related data matrix improved. Hence, the quest for ways to get information on how to troubleshoot performance problems in SQL Server grew.

Software Engineering Principles and Practice by Hans van Vliet is a good textbook which delves into the WHAT of software development, and takes a user through the normal Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) from requirements gathering to deployment in a production environment. And like good software, each chapter is loosely coupled allowing the reader to get more information on the topic of interest.

Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C#: Using the Web Services Enhancements 2.0 by Jeffrey Hasan

Review by Adnan Masood

 Practical, Developer-oriented, and Contemporary!

Long awaited Jeffrey Hasan’s Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C#: Using the Web Services Enhancements 2.0 is finally out. Developing distributed applications has become an increasingly indigenous part of a present-day developer's software life cycle. XML web services provide us an easier and standardized way to facilitate distributed communications. Service orientation takes this to another level, i.e. standardizing loose coupling of these services via contracts. Hasan's book provides answers for today's enterprise needs to learn and formulate their existing distributed communication frameworks as they shift towards Service Oriented Architecture.
